How smart card technology can turn a driver’s license into a Real ID?

OVERVIEW

One of the 9/11 suspects used a fake driver’s license when he was stopped by police for a traffic violation. He was given a ticket and then drove away.
In May 2005, Congress passed the Real ID Act. It says by 2008, drivers’ licenses will have to be a “real ID,” meeting federally approved standards.
Before receiving a Real ID from a state motor vehicle agency, the identity documents presented by drivers will be more rigorously checked. This is called proofing.
Standards will be in place to check out-of-state licenses.
New security technology such as smart cards will be used so that Real IDs cannot be counterfeited.
Eventually, a Real ID will be required for everything from booking air travel to opening a bank account.
