In May 2005, Congress passed the Real ID Act. It says by 2008, drivers’ licenses will
have to be a “real ID,” meeting federally approved standards. |

Before receiving a Real ID from a state motor vehicle agency, the identity documents
presented by drivers will be more rigorously checked. This is called proofing. |
