How smart card technology can turn a driver’s license into a Real ID?

OVERVIEW

In May 2005, Congress passed the Real ID Act. It says by 2008, drivers’ licenses will have to be a “real ID,” meeting federally approved standards.

New security technology such as smart cards will be used so that Real IDs cannot be counterfeited.
Eventually, a Real ID will be required for everything from opening a bank account to boarding an airplane
