Providing national ID cards
All
Portuguese citizens should soon be using their new
e-ID cards, which include a built-in biometrics feature, as their
national ID document. This new so-called “Citizen
Card,” the size of a credit card, enables citizens to communicate
with their government administrations simply, rapidly and more securely.
It includes several ID numbers such as civil identification, taxpayer,
social security and health, and will later replace the elector card.
It will also enable a variety of e-government services to be available
through the electronic identification it provides. The cardholder has a
secret PIN code to identify and authenticate himself/herself, and the
card generates a legally-binding digital signature for secure
declarations and administrative procedures.
Gemalto is providing the entire card solution including the secure
operatingsystem, the personalization system and applications, the
middleware and associated helpdesk services. This is the first ID
project in Europe based on Identification Authentication Signature
specifications.
