In August 2011, Visa announced plans to accelerate the United States’
migration to EMV payment technology and mobile payments. This announcement
significantly changed the payments landscape in the United States from a future
of magnetic stripe payments to one of EMV contact and contactless and mobile
payments. Moving to EMV will significantly reduce fraud, has potential to make
CNP transactions secure, and will make U.S. payments interoperable with most of
the rest of the world. Because of lower costs of terminals and cards, as well as
Visa’s TIP program, migrating to EMV will be easier and less costly than it was
even a few years ago.
