1. What are Gemalto Prox smart card readers?


Gemalto’s Prox readers are a new range of proximity contactless smart card readers that can be used in various applications that use contactless smart card technology.
 

2. What are the Prox reader models that Gemalto offer?  


Gemalto’s latest offering has two reader models:

The dual interface smart card reader (Prox-DU), combines contact and contactless smart card interfaces in one cost-effective reader. It also conveniently provides a smooth migration path from contact to contactless smart card applications.

The contactless reader with SAM slot (Prox-SU) is a PC-link contactless reader equipped with the added security of a built-in Secure Access Module slot. This type of reader addresses applications that need a contact SAM card as required in specific security schemes.
 

3. For which applications can Prox readers be used?  


The dual interface smart card reader (Prox-DU reader model) is convenient for applications that use contactless and contact smart card technology such as network and physical access control, user identity authentication, government-related identity verification programs, e-business and home banking, as well as customer loyalty programs. This reader is designed to meet international standards for use in the health care sector, identity and access control markets for public and private organizations.

The contactless reader with the added security of a built-in Secure Access Module (SAM) card slot (Prox-SU reader model) is designed for use in a wide array of applications such as physical and logical access control (i.e. border control that needs SAM) ticket control, enrollment systems, loyalty programs, among others.

5. What do I need to be able to use Gemalto Prox readers?


A PC running on standard operating systems (Windows, Linux or Mac) with the specific software or application, and a compatible smart card (contact or contactless). 6. How do the readers work?


There’s no specific setting required for the Prox–DU reader. Just plug it into the USB slot of your computer and using the native drivers of the operating system, the Prox-DU reader will be ready for use.

The Prox–SU may require the installation of a SIM/SAM card into the reader. For detailed information on setting up the reader, refer to the Gemalto support page.
 

7. What type of smart cards can I use?


The Prox readers support any type of ISO14443-A&B T=CL contactless smart cards, MIFARE® contactless smart cards, ISO7816 contact smart card or SIM/SAM card.

On compliance:
The readers are compliant with EMV and PC/SC modes.
The interface is compliant with the EMV2000 version 4.0 specifications, ISO 7816-3 and -4 and ability to supply the cards with 5 V, 3 V, or 1.8 V (Class A, B, or C cards respectively) and IAS version 1.0 certified (Identification, Authentication & Signature)
 

8. Do the readers need installation drivers?


The Prox-DU and Prox-SU readers have plug and play features on multiple operating systems. Further driver support and package can be found and downloaded from the Gemalto support page.
 

9. Can the readers’ firmware be updated?


Yes. The smart card readers are meant to evolve and updated by downloading upgrades that contain latest reader features.
 

10. What are the similarities between Prox-DU and Prox-SU readers?


The Prox–DU and The Prox–SU have the following common features:

• Up-to-date architecture using the Gemalto Prox and GemCore technologies
• Ability to drive any type of ISO14443-A&B T=CL contactless smart cards
• Ability to drive any type of MIFARE® contactless smart cards
• Ability to drive any type of ISO7816 contact smart card or SIM/SAM card
• Support for smart card with a higher baud rate (contact and contactless)
• Easily upgradeable download of the latest features
• Standard USB Full speed interface, bus powered (no external power supply required)
• Unique USB serial number which enables that the device can be plugged into any
• USB slot on a computer without having to re-install the driver
• Standard CCID interface for both smart card slot (contact and contactless)
• Standard HID interface for device administration
• No need of a proprietary USB driver. The standard CCID and HID drivers of the computer can be used
• PC/SC V2.0 compliant
• Embedded protection against dual interface smart card damage and switch feature to select the active interface (contact or contactless).
 

11. What is the main difference between Prox-DU and Prox-SU readers


The main difference between the Prox–DU and Prox–SU models is related to the smart card
slot:
• Prox–DU: the smart card slot located in the top cabinet is open. The user can insert or remove its ID-1 size smart card directly into or from the reader slot
• Prox–SU: the smart card slot located in the top cabinet is closed. The user should open the casing before inserting its ID-000 size smart card into the dedicated
connector. When the casing is closed the SIM/SAM card cannot be removed.

Secure Access Module or SAM is an additional security feature in a smart card reader. Mutual authentication is done via the card to the reader and vice versa thus making a system more secure.
