Optical technology saves manual input, brings convenience

Optical TAN generators, such as for example Ezio Optical TAN from Gemalto, increase the user convenience here substantially without making any sacrifices in security. The new method, known as "Smart TAN comfort", is based on the ZKA Standard HHD 1.32. The user does not need to manually enter the transaction data required for the computation. This work is handled by optical interfaces, which are integrated on the rear of the reader. To do this the user only has to hold his device briefly in front of the screen, confirm the data in the display which is read out via Flicker code and generate a TAN by the press of a button, the TAN only being valid for this transaction. The technology requires no software on the side of the customer and, with the size of a cheque card, the reading device even fits into a wallet.

Secure technologies are already available today. Why then do so many banks still persist with their TAN lists? The reason given here is always the conversion costs to the new system (server solution on the bank side and TAN generators on the customer side) as well as doubts about the acceptance of the new solutions. This perception is however somewhat short-sighted. After all, the customer expects that the credit institution that he trusts is offering sophisticated online banking solutions – and is keeping up with the state of the art, not just with the range of services, but also on the subject of security.

Banks such as Barclays in Great Britain and the Vietcombank in Vietnam have already had very positive experience with modern security solutions such as TAN generators. It is not only that the customers quickly adapted to the new and secure solutions, institutions were able to register an overproportional increase in demand for online account models.
