In September 2006, Gemalto was selected by the Sultanate of Oman for the second phase of the country’s national ID program, supplying some additional 2.5 million Sealys eID Cards, Gemalto’s smart ID cards that will enable the Sultanate of Oman to provide faster and more secure public services to its population.
The first phase, which began in January 2004, has enabled more than 1.2 million Omani citizens and residents to benefit from a secure and convenient identification means.
Gemalto was selected to provide the complete range of Coesys Secure Solutions to the Royal Oman Police for the setup of smart card-based national ID program in Sultanate of Oman. This was comprised of Coesys Enrolment, Coesys eGovernment, Coesys eBorder as well as Coesys Issuance solutions, where Gemalto has supplied consultancy, project management and integration services as well as software and equipments for a decentralized personalization environment. Oman's citizens and residents' personal credentials are securely stored on the cards, including name, address, digital color photo and fingerprints. The national ID card provides secure access to three main applications that include identity, driver's license and border control.
The Oman ID program is the first smart card-based eGovernment solution ever deployed in the Middle East. It aims to make the Sultanate’s ID system and processes more efficient and secure, both for authorities and citizens.
