Social security and healthcare cards
Austria:
In 2007, Austria launched a social insurance card that includes:
- An insurance attestation,
- A European Healthcare Insurance Certificate to cover healthcare costs
when traveling,
- Access to online social sector services,
- A possible future integration with the BurgerKarte citizen card.
Meanwhile, it uses an identical technical platform and includes a means for
digital signature and access to e-Government portals.
- 11 million smart cards have been issued to-date, including 24,000
healthcare professional cards
