Secure Access and Storage

UICC and LTE Together: Benefits and Possibilities

One of the most important benefits the UICC provides to LTE networks is security. Each subscription is unique and therefore each card is different. The UICC clearly separates a subscription from a mobile device. The UICC is where mobile carriers store the applications that bring their LTE services to fruition, such as for roaming, branding, device tracking and service portals. Storing such applications in the UICC means that they benefit from the UICCs’ security credentials, while being completely independent from the devices.

The UICC enables users to make sure that only they can access the LTE network (and not someone attempting to steal their service), and to protect their personal information. The UICC’s algorithms and certificates make it extremely difficult for communications to be intercepted or accessed. The UICC not only can house many applications, but it can do so while offering the level of security necessary for that application – such as in the banking world for financial transactions – and keeping them separated with a firewall of sorts.

The multimedia-enabled UICCs securely store all subscriber content, such as emails, videos and pictures, and handset settings. Because the UICC is removable, it is easy for subscribers to move it when getting a new device, and not lose any of their information or settings. Subscribers also have personal data protection in case the handset is lost or stolen.

The UICC also has implications for more personalized customer care. When a subscriber calls customer service, for example, the representative is able to find the UICC and handset model, just by knowing the subscribers phone number. Problems can be easily fixed remotely, saving the subscriber a trip to the operator.
