NFC is just the ticket

The Review (Gemalto): February 2010
Author: Cath Everett

The widespread use of NFC-based cellphones for mobile ticketing is just around the corner. Gemalto looks at the development of a technology that consumers are eager to adopt and the factors that are holding it back

You want to catch a bus to the city center. Before leaving home, you visit the transportation company’s website and buy a ticket, which is automatically credited to your cellphone. Then, when the bus arrives, you simply board it, wave your phone in front of a reader and you’re off.

It’s an appealing vision – and the good news is that the technology that makes it possible, based on cellphones using near field communication (NFC), is on the verge of breaking into the mainstream. Several cities and conurbations are either introducing NFC-based ticketing trials or expanding existing ones, to test out the pros and cons of the technology and understand how consumers use it.
