Gemalto Steps Up its Innovation Policy in Multimedia Services for Mobile Phones

The MaXSSIMM program is supported by France's Agence de l'Innovation Industrielle and involves a large number of players in the telecoms and electronics industries

Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Feb 9, 2007 - Gemalto (Euronext NL0000400653 GTO), a world leader in digital security, today announces the official launch of the MaXSSIMM* program, aimed at establishing and promoting a new industrial standard for mobile multimedia services. The program is supported by France's AII* (industrial innovation agency), and is intended to facilitate and accelerate the implementation of personalized and secure Internet services for mobile phones. These include personal data management and the transfer of protected multimedia content from one device to another. The Gemalto-led consortium created to implement MaXSSIMM will put forward a solution comprised of prototypes in 2008. Live trials using the finalized technologies will be conducted in 2009.
 
The aim of MaXSSIMM is to design a complete solution ("max-SIM" card, mobile phone and operator servers) allowing application developers to rapidly roll out new multimedia services on mobile phones. The proposed technological innovations will lead to greater personalization of mobile phones, making services easier to use and multimedia content easier to access via a unified user interface. They will also enable users to synchronize their personal data with their PC, PDA or their operator's server. The solution will ensure secure transmission and data confidentiality in an environment offering enhanced services, contents and devices.
 
The consortium reflects the complementary nature of technical skills needed in a program like this. It includes microelectronics manufacturers like ST Microelectronics, NXP and TOPPAN Photomasks, digital security specialists like Gemalto and handset vendors like Sagem Communication. The consortium also benefits from the expertise of telecoms operators and service providers like Orange and Amadeus, as well as specialized SMEs like Trusted Logic, Voxinzebox and Cityvox. Eurecom (communication systems research institute) is helping with researching and evaluating the overall solution. These skills, complementary in the value chain, will allow MaXSSIMM to be rolled out rapidly in the mobile Internet services market and applications will be trialed as of 2009. 
 
The consortium plans to set up an approach to promote the solution developed within the framework of MaXSSIMM among technology users, i.e. mobile operators, device manufacturers and service developers. It is also planning to create a “MaXSSIMM” label, guaranteeing component compatibility.
 
 

*AII: Agence de l’Innovation Industrielle, set up by the French government in late 2005. The AII's brief is to support innovative large-scale industrial projects with potential markets of over €500m. AII has a total budget of around €1.7bn to support the various industries involved. Projects supported by AII are subject to the European Commission’s approval.
