Gemplus exclusive partner for Tunisian EMV migration
Gemplus and SMT to launch smart card based payment system
Tunis, 14 November 2001. Gemplus, the world's number one provider of solutions empowered by smart cards, today announced an exclusive contract with Tunisia's SMT (Societe Monetique Tunisie) to provide technology for the country's migration to a smart card based EMV (Europay, Mastercard and Visa) solution. Gemplus will deliver hundreds of thousand cards, a complete personnalization center, and training and support worth several million Euros. The cards will be distributed countrywide in all the bank's 13 outlets.
Gemplus will be the sole supplier for the first three years of the migration which begins in January 2002.
Tunisia's main source of income is tourism, but it found that tourists were encountering unacceptable levels payment card fraud. As a result SMT, with the support of Tunisian Ministery of Finance, organised a call for tender for a full EMV migration solution. The solution secures people's transactions and therefore increases tourist confidence in Tunisian commerce.
Tunisia is pioneering the use of smart card technology in Africa, and it is the first in the region to implement the EMV security solution. The cards will follow all the international standards of security, following the specifications given by Visa and Mastercard.
