Gemplus tops Frost & Sullivan's global market study of smart card industry for the second year running
Cartes 2001, Paris, 23October 2001 – Gemplus (NASDAQ:GEMP), the world’s leading provider of smart card-enabled solutions, has today been recognised as the undisputed global market leader in the smart card industry based on a market study in 2000. Two independent global market surveys now confirm Gemplus’ market leadership in the smart card industry as this report follows a world ranking by Dataquest Gartner announced earlier this year.
According to Frost & Sullivan’s market data, Gemplus recorded a massive 623 million smart cards shipped in 2000, 66 million cards shipped ahead of its closest competitor Schlumberger.
The report ranking is an important milestone for Gemplus as it continues to strengthen its position in the telecommunications, financial services and e-Business security markets by offering a complete smart card solutions package from software, hardware to applications and services.

This successful ranking follows a series of groundbreaking partnerships. Gemplus’ multi-application solutions for the banking and retail industries have been co-developed and//or adopted by key market players such as Visa, Providian Financial Corporation, First USA, Fleet Credit Card Services and Target Corporation. Gemplus has strengthened its position in the 3G market by providing the first 3rd Generation card which is currently being deployed by NTT DoCoMo. Gemplus is also enhancing its smart card infrastructure technology for PC OEM partners like Compaq, and jsut teamed up with Palm enabling the company to provide a multi-application smart card infrastructure solution for the mobile and PDA market.
