Gemplus and Guandong Mobile Communication Corporation provide Chinese subscribers with a World First for Point-of-Sale, mobile service download.
Shenzhen 20 March 2001, Gemplus, the world's leading provider of smart card based solutions partners with Guangdong Mobile Communication Corporation (GMCC), the largest subsidiary of China Mobile Communication Corporation (CMCC), launches the world's first commercial dynamic SIM Toolkit (STK) application download services at Point of Sale.
With GemMobile Dynamic Services Manager, selecting, changing and renewing mobile applications can be easily carried out at the subscriber's convenience at the Point-of-Sale.
GemMobile Dynamic Services Manager (GDSM) has been developed in response to China's telecommunication operators need to continuously offer new value added services to existing and potential subscribers.
GDSM is Gemplus' latest Point-of-Sale (POS) solution designed for easy and secure SIM Toolkit (STK) application management. Built on Gemplus' vast experience in m-commerce and financial services, this comprehensive solution also includes Key Management System and a specially designed security mechanism. When a user accesses a new banking or stock trading application, transaction keys can be automatically downloaded into the SIM card through a secured over-the-air channel.
With the GDSM system deployed in February 2001, GMCC is able to offer their subscribers a choice of more than 10 applications including mobile banking, stock trading and Information-on-demand services. New services can be introduced and offered to subscribers at a later date. GMCC can provide its subscribers with the freedom to choose and change any service whenever required, even after the SIM card has been issued. This opens up a new way of marketing value-added-services to the public : "Choose your preferred services or bank whenever you want".
The evolution of SIM Toolkit script has enabled mobile phone operators to offer a wide range of value added services. In March 2000, GMCC launched China's first mobile banking application using Gemplus STK cards. Since then, the demand for more banking, stock trading and other services has proliferated. There was a need for dynamic applications services downloading, because it was impossible to pre-load all banks applications and services onto a single STK card that has limited memory space. Also, in the past, the pre-defined STK applications could not be changed once they had been loaded onto the card during production.
"GMCC has always been at the forefront in implementing new ideas and innovative services in China. We were involved right from the start of this project as a technology partner and completed the whole product development in China", said Mr. Ong Teck Meng, General Manager for Gemplus China. "Sharing the same value of implementing innovative ideas, Gemplus China will continue to develop new products and applications to best serve Chinese customers."
