Gemplus supplies SIM/WIM for first financial transaction on WAP with digital signature
Luxembourg, 23 April 2001 - Gemplus, the leader in providing smart card based solutions in mobile telephony, has supported KPN Mobile with the technology to facilitate the roll-out of easy and secure solutions for making purchases over the mobile Internet. This is the first financial transaction using the digital signature on WAP and is supported by the WIM technology embedded in the Gemplus SIM/WIM card, GemXploreTM Trust. This "world first" breakthrough has been achieved through a partnership between KPN Mobile, Nokia and Interpay.
WIM (WAP Identity Module) is based on the WAP 1.2 specification (the latest WAP standard) enabling secure transactions and non-repudiation based on a digital signature. This means that users can perform transactions securely and easily using a single PIN code. In this case, WIM is implemented on the operator SIM card enabling secure transactions using the SET protocol - a standard for electronic payments designed by Eurocard / Mastercard and Visa.
Future mobile commerce solutions will be based on WIM technology which enables secure transactions such as trading, banking, ticketing and payments.
"The availability of secure, trusted and user-friendly solutions will be a major contribution to the success of m-commerce. Gemplus brings its leading experience in SIM/WIM cards to this project in order to bring new levels of security between consumers, financial institutions and mobile operators" said Patrick Imbert, Director, Mobile Commerce Group, Gemplus.
