Gemplus First to Market with 3G Card
New products and services for 3G wireless networks
Paris La Défense, 25 January 2001 – Gemplus, world leader in smart card based solutions and mobile telephony applications, launches the GemXplore 3G family of products following the commercial delivery of its first USIM card (Universal Subscriber Identity Module) for the 3G marketplace.
A GemXplore 3G USIM card inserted in every 3G handset will be the key element to connect and authenticate users to the network, to manage their service preferences and personal data and offer them a range of advanced mobile services with the highest security. GemXplore 3G is based on a multi-application design compliant with the latest 3GPP standards. This gives operators all the flexibility they need in their migration towards 3G.
GemXplore 3G offers an enhanced level of security built around the new 3GPP authentication scheme allowing operators unprecedented flexibility in implementing their security policies. Operators can tailor their security to cater to the needs of the end-user while ensuring that they enhance their protection levels over time.
Thanks to the interoperability of USIM, the transition from one network to another becomes a straightforward task. GemXplore 3G ensures the simultaneous support of 2G and 3G subscriptions, the transfer of 2G personal data into 3G and the availability of 2G applications in a 3G environment.

About 3G
3G technology, with its inherent multimedia wireless capability, will place the power of the Internet and the convenience of mobility and transfer speed directly into the hands of the end-user. This unprecedented combination is expected to boost all aspects of mobile commerce. GemXplore 3G brings the PKI-based secure execution platform needed to support these.
3G will bring a host of new applications onto the market. Most will need a secure solution. For example, operators will only be able to provide Virtual Private Network services if they can rely on secure application-oriented architecture. GemXplore 3G will be the platform of choice to control access, protect every information exchange, and offer the flexibility to make transactions easier over time.
Another important application field is that of data storage management. With the onset of 3G, it is expected that there will be an explosion in the amount of data every individual will have to manage, be it personal, business or multimedia. Users will require various locations to store their data, i.e. remote data warehouses. GemXplore 3G is the most appropriate tool to access and control these facilities, keep track of their status, open access to third parties, etc..
These applications, among others, will benefit from the multi-application design of GemXplore 3G, enabling a fast and easy deployment process.
Ron Black, Next Generation Networks Vice President, says: “ Gemplus is in a unique position to support operators in their 3G commercial roll out due to our experience with early 3G adopters and an effective commercial presence. We believe that our product will be recognized as a key factor for offering security and confidence for next generation mobile services.
The first commercial release of GemXplore 3G has already been delivered to a number of operators in the Asia Pacific region.
