Gemplus supplies millions of new bankcards to Postbank, the largest
bank in The Netherlands
Gemplus chosen to produce exact replica
of existing Postbank debit card
Capelle aan de IJssel, The Netherlands, 4 September 2002 - Gemplus
International NV (Euronext: Sicovam 5768 and NASDAQ: GEMP), the world's
leading provider of smart card enabled solutions, has been chosen by Postbank,
the largest bank in the Netherlands, as supplier of their new debit bankcards.
The card in question, branded by Postbank as "Giropas", was
created and produced by a different vendor in 2001 and introduced to the
market beginning of 2002. When Postbank decided to use a different company
as second source, Gemplus was chosen amongst a number of competitors.
This card is the unique result of advanced printing technology from Gemplus,
producing an exact replica of a graphically complex card. The first cards
were delivered beginning of August this year.
Gemplus' German PVC production site in Herne has managed to emulate the
complex design of the Giropas card and reproduce an identical copy. This
is an exceptional industry performance, as every card manufacturer's production
process is constructed differently, with unique equipment and materials
that tend to largely influence the final result. Gemplus worked closely
together with Postbank, mixing colors and fine tuning manufacturing instruments
in order to replicate the previous version. The outcome is a Giropas card
identical to the original, with the exception of Gemplus' name on the
back of the card.
"For unique tenders such as this we only invite companies with a
vast experience in the production of complex bankcards," says Carlo
Verhart, Corporate Identity Manager at Postbank." Gemplus is an international
and trusted player in this market, and had already during the test productions
proven the capability to reproduce our existing card. Besides banking
on Gemplus' high professionalism and performance, we also benefited from
the excellent quality of their cards."
