Gemplus and Mitsubishi Electric Telecom Herald First OTA Delivery Solution
Over GPRS Network
Significant Boost for Mobile Data Services
- Gemplus and Mitsubishi Electric Telecom demonstrate
the first download of Over-The-Air(OTA) services via GPRS network
- Complete personalization process allows operators
to download applications on demand, manage content and match subscriber
needs
- Supports Gemplus' ARPU Factory solutions by providing
operators with the tools to securely deliver REVENUE generating solutions
at the users' convenience
3GSM World Congress, Cannes, 19th February 2002 - Gemplus, the world
leading provider of smart card powered solutions, has partnered with Mitsubishi
Electric Telecom in order to enable and facilitate services over the GPRS
network. By implementing the latest SAT release '99 in Gemplus cards and
Trium handset for GPRS, Gemplus and Mitsubishi Electric Telecom are able
to demonstrate the first SIM-based Java download over a GPRS network.
This project is designed to boost mobile data services on the way to 3G
while making them easier to use for the subscriber. Gemplus and Mitsubishi
Electric Telecom are the first to make this demonstration on commercially
existing products.
As OTA reinforces the direct link between the operator and the end-user,
operators benefit by being able to develop their branding. By facilitating
the same service over GPRS,the operator will be able to offer an increasingly
personalized service to their end-users as Gemplus and Mitsubishi Electric
Telecom work together to render services easier to use and manipulate.
This personalization and ease of use will help operators to build a stronger
link with their existing customer base.
The enhanced capabilities of the GPRS communication channel represents
the ideal stepping stone for operators on their way to 3G. It opens up
numerous opportunities to download applications (from phonebook functions,
games, purchasing, information, etc.) under the control of the operator
who can then ensure their security and appropriate billing structure.
Opening SIM cards to the data world.
Philippe Vallée, President of the Telecom Business Unit, Gemplus,
said that "This project has enabled Gemplus to further develop our
strategy of helping operators increase their ARPU by harnessing the power
of Java and the capabilities of GPRS. By being the first to demonstrate
the concrete download of Java applications via GPRS, we are able to guarantee
the interoperability of our cards in an open environment."
Opening SIM cards to the data world
Gemplus brings its expertise in developing innovative and future-proof
solutions to operators. Having already launched the first commercial card
for 3G, Gemplus is ahead of the game in helping operators develop their
migration strategies to 3G.
Mitsubishi Electric Telecom has brought to the project its new range
of multimedia handsets. "We are pleased to show that again we are
at the forefront of offering innovative solutions to operator issues."
said Yasuhide Iwata, President of Mitsubishi Electric Telecom. "The
Trium Eclipse with its colour screen, rich sound, images and the latest
SIM technology will allow operators to make the best use of new multimedia
technologies, generating increased ARPU and customer loyalty."
For more information, visit the Mitsubishi Electric Telecom stand at
the 3GSM World Congress (Hall 2, stand G15/16) to see the following demonstrations.
- Download and Upload of phonebook
- Download Java applet onto the SIM
- Authenticated download of data features Over The Air onto the Trium
handset
- Secure Service Delivery
With clear knowledge of customer segments, targeted services and offers
will expand. Once created, the service needs to be securely delivered
to the right subscribers. Managing access to content is one of the primary
roles of the card. This is set to grow in GPRS and 3G environments powered
by Java. The SIM comes into its element after issuance when linked to
an Over the Air platform meaning subscriber's mobile experiences can be
continually modified according to their needs by delivering new applications,
upgrading existing ones or deleting those that are no longer of interest.
This is done with maximum convenience for the end-user. These basic steps
open the door to an evolving range of opportunities that give increasingly
high rates of ROI.
This offer forms part of Gemplus' ARPU Factory, the industry's most comprehensive
platform of solutions, a series of interworking solutions designed to
reduce operator costs, reduce churn and enhance the relationship with
the end-user. It is through these solutions that operators will be able
to increase their ARPU while offering a secure and improved service to
their subscribers.
