security certification scheme)
Luxembourg, 25 September, 2002 - Gemplus (NASDAQ: GEMP), the world's
leading provider of smart card solutions, announces its selection by Movil
de Entel, the Bolivian branch of the TIM group, to deliver highly-secure
32K Java Card technology for the launch of value-added services
to their existing GSM subscriber base.
GemXplore 'Xpresso enables secure value-added services and applet download.
When the user downloads or subscribes to a particular service, the operator
needs to be assured that it is stored securely and doesn't interfere with
the user's data or applications. GemXplore 'Xpresso's EAL5+ certification
ensures that appropriate firewalls and download infrastructure are in
place, thus enabling the safe delivery of services such as mobile commerce
to the subscriber's mobile phone. Competing Java Card technology has only
reached EAL4+ certification.
GemXplore 'Xpresso's flexible platform enables network operators to develop
SIM-based services with a faster time to market, helping them differentiate
their service offering. Combined with Gemplus' recent developments in
Dynamic Memory Management, which enables an efficient service roll-out
and management of applications on the SIM, Gemplus is able to reinforce
and maintain ARPU levels during the card lifecycle. Gemplus offers the
most comprehensive range of secure Java technology-based cards and applications.
"Movil de Entel chose to work with Gemplus as their SIM card, GemXplore
'Xpresso, was clearly ahead in terms of security and interoperability,"
said Ivan Ariñez, Value Added Services Manager, Movil de Entel.
"We are looking forward to developing and delivering killer applications
to our subscribers with Gemplus as a preferred partner."
Gemplus fully supports the idea of an open world for Telecom through
the use of Java technology. As such, it is a major contributor to key
standards bodies and a founding member of both the Java Card Forum and
SIMalliance. GemXplore 'Xpresso supports the "Write Once Run Anywhere"
concept, where developers can write applets and run them on any Java Card
technology on the market, independent of the Operating System or chip
used.
"The ability to securely deliver applications and value-added services
to subscribers is a core benefit of SIM card technology. In order to make
this process as fast and seamless as possible, we needed a partner with
unmatched dedication and superior technical support," said Omar Perez,
Technical Manager Network Department at Movil de Entel. "Possessing
both of these attributes, Gemplus was a perfect choice to help Movil de
Entel deliver valuable services and applications to its subscribers."
Bertrand Moussel, Telecommunications Business Unit Director for Gemplus
Latin America, said "Delivering the first Java Card technology to
such a strategic region in terms of development and growth is a great
success for Gemplus. We are able to deliver the best solution in terms
of security and flexibility and this is recognised by Movil de Entel's
faith in us."
