Mobile TeleSystems And Gemplus Announce Unprecedented Results of Russian Operator's Dynamic SIM Services Offering - MTS-Info

First results of the SIM-based value added service package show this to be the most extensive set of dynamic SIM services ever provided to Russian subscribers.

  • 6 months into deployment, more than 700,000 users have access to MTS-Info, making the total number of requests to MTS-Info 5% of all billed SMS traffic in the Mobile TeleSystems network
  • The offer is based on the Gemplus technology: SIM Browser, OTA1 Platform and SIM cards
  • Gemplus' Mobile Self-Care solution enables Mobile TeleSystems subscribers to select and manage their own set of services including chat, e-mail, mobile banking and mobile account management
  • Dynamic SIM Toolkit technology and Gemplus SIM cards mean that there is no need to change the handset or set-up additional Internet connections to access the new services

Moscow, 24 October 2002, Gemplus (Paris Euronext: Euroclear 5768 and NASDAQ: GEMP), the world's leading provider of smart card solutions, and Mobile TeleSystems (NYSE: MBT), Russia's leading mobile network operator, announce positive results following the first six months of MTS-Info.

In April 2002, Mobile TeleSystems offered its subscribers a new package for wireless services, MTS-Info, enabling access to various information resources. Gemplus provided the SIM-browsing technology, which provides subscribers with access to a wide range of services such as E-mail, SMS Chat, Mobile Banking, mobile account management and many others.

The Gemplus OTA platform, GemXplore SuiteTM, together with its online gateway, GemXplore On-lineTM, enabled Mobile TeleSystems to remotely manage hundreds of thousands of handset homepages and successfully deliver a range of value-added services for Mobile TeleSystems subscribers in Moscow.

The results already show positive interest in the services offered. In the 6 months since deployment, more than 700,000 users have access to MTS-Info, making the total number of requests to the service offering 5% of all billed SMS traffic in the Mobile TeleSystems network. The new value-added services package is marked by its unbeaten convenience and simplicity. Thanks to built-in Mobile Self-Care, subscribers can choose to download or discard any service from the package via their own mobile handset.

The Mobile Self-Care System is one of the main assets for mobile subscriber. Mobile TeleSystems subscribers are able to quickly and reliably create an individual set of services to manage the SIM card memory themselves. Moreover, the Gemplus solution made it possible for Mobile TeleSystems subscribers to self-manage their mobile accounts reducing the number of calls to the customer call center. Mobile subscribers can choose between Cyrillic or Latin alphabets for all services offered.

Philippe Vallée, President of Gemplus Telecom Business Unit, said: "MTS-Info is one of the most advanced SIM-based service offerings on the market. We recognise that the future of mobile telecommunications lies in providing mobile subscribers with a convenient and reliable set of services. By providing "one click" access, the SIM has a strong role as a reliable VAS enabler. Thus, Mobile TeleSystems is able to forge strong relationships with their subscribers and we are keen to help them maximize this. The results are already impressive and we will continue to work together to build on this."

Mikhail Susov, the Mobile TeleSystems First Vice President said: "Mobile TeleSystems' strategy is to get our subscribers used to using their handset for more than voice services. By deploying MTS-Info via the SIM platform, we are able to offer our subscribers with a greater choice of wireless services and a more customized user experience. In addition, we are using the SIM as a powerful marketing tool establishing subscribers' loyalty and boosting SMS traffic. We are delighted with the current results - thanks to Gemplus' experience and knowledge which brought this project to fruition."

About MTS-Info
Mobile TeleSystems has deployed a range of services from Traffic information, email, various entertainment and community services (chat, find a friend), to event-related services, such as "World Cup 2002". This enabled 35,000 mobile subscribers to receive up-to-the-minute information on their mobile phones via the dynamic STK menu. When the World Cup ended, this service ceased to exist and subscribers were able to re-use the newly available space in the SIM to download other services of interest.
