QUALCOMM Announces Availability of the R-UIM/UTK Software for CDMA MSM
Chipsets
Software Toolkit Solution Supports China Unicom CDMA
Handsets with R-UIM-Based Applications
SAN DIEGO - March 11, 2002 - QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM),
pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital
wireless technology, today announced availability of the Removable User
Identity Module (R-UIM)/UIM Toolkit (UTK) system software. The R-UIM/UTK
solution was delivered to support China United Telecommunications Corporation
(China Unicom) handsets designed for R-UIM-based applications on their
CDMA network. The R-UIM/ UTK solution supports easy roaming between GSM
and CDMA networks and Preferred Roaming List (PRL) downloads using Short
Message Service (SMS), which will allow operators to update terminals
over the air as roaming agreements evolve. The QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies
(QCT) system solution is compatible with IS-95A/B and CDMA2000 1X Mobile
Station Modem (MSM(tm)) chipsets operating with smart cards from Gemplus
S.A. (Euronext: Sicovam 5768 and Nasdaq: GEMP) and SchlumbergerSema, a
business segment of Schlumberger Limited (NYSE: SLB).
"The R-UIM/UTK system solution meets the roaming and SMS-based PRL
download requirements for China Unicom's CDMA commercial network and planned
services," said Luis Pineda, vice president of product management
for QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. "Close cooperation with our system
partners and their development teams was required to ensure that the development
and testing of the complete solution was completed on schedule."
"The R-UIM/UTK capability provides China Unicom with the ability
to manage global roaming and remotely upgrade our subscribers with a growing
number of competitive services across CDMA and GSM networks," said
Zhang Fan, general manager of China Unicom's Mobile Communication Department.
"The R-UIM/UTK software for our CDMA terminals and SMS downloads
meets a fundamental requirement that will allow China Unicom to leverage
subscriber growth and roaming partnerships as our CDMA network deployment
expands."
"By implementing UTK in the GemXplore World range of smart cards,
we are helping China Unicom enhance their end-user relationships by enabling
user-friendly, value-added services," said Frédéric
Vasnier, vice President of marketing, cards & tools, Gemplus. "We
look forward to continuing our engineering collaboration with QCT to enhance
R-UIM/UTK capabilities in the future."
"SchlumbergerSema is proud to extend the system solution capabilities
of the Simera Airflex family of R-UIM cards with QCT's R-UIM/UTK software
and MSM products," said Xavier Chanay, vice president, Mobile Communications
Products at SchlumbergerSema. "Our longtime relationship with QCT
as well as our best-in-class smart card technology enabled us to accompany
their RUIM/UTK solution rollout. Our development teams have demonstrated
how key operator requirements can be anticipated and tested to address
the quick time-to-market goals that mobile network operators such as China
Unicom demand of their technology providers."
The addition of UTK system software to R-UIM capabilities enables R-UIM
card-based SMS applications that interact with wireless handsets and the
network to provide value-added services. Compliant with the R-UIM specifications
outlined for the CDMA terminal and network requirements of China Unicom,
China's second-largest state-owned telecommunications company, the R-UIM/UTK
system software has been successfully field tested in China in January
2002 with production R-UIM/UTK cards from Gemplus (GemXplore World(tm)
family) and SchlumbergerSema (Simera Airflex(tm)). The R-UIM/UTK solution
is currently supported for IS-95A/B on QCT's MSM3000(tm) and MSM3100(tm)
chipsets, and for CDMA2000 1X on the MSM5105(tm) chipset. Support for
the MSM5100(tm) and MSM5500(tm) chipsets as well as the MSM6xxx family
of chipsets is expected in the near future.
