Mobile operators and Radicchio work to develop global mobile identity
Standard
- Operator summit launches effort with Hutchison
3G, MMO2, MTN, Orange, Vodafone and others
- Effort recognised by the European Commission,
the GSM Association, the ICTSB and the Liberty Alliance Project
London, 27 August, 2002: Radicchio, the foremost industry organisation
for wireless commerce, and its members are formulating a global, secure
identity framework. This standard enables mobile operators, financial
institutions, governments and other services to strongly identify the
end-user and thereby lower the risk and cost of e-commerce services. For
example, strong end-user identity facilitates guaranteed payment for merchants
and enables authenticated access services such as corporate and government
portals.
At a March summit in France, leading mobile operators including Hutchinson
3G, MM02, MTN, Orange, Sonera and Vodafone reviewed Radicchio's proposal
for global Trusted Transaction Roaming (t²r). The cooperative framework
is intended to unleash the same potential for wireless data services as
GSM roaming had on mobile voice traffic.
The (t²r) framework endorses the secure digital identification of
all end-users in a wireless and mobile network. This allows e-commerce
services outside the home operator network to securely identify the end-user
and provide a better level of service such as secure payment and personalisation.
Mobile phone users can, for example, safely purchase services (e.g. train
tickets) while travelling internationally or access personal data remotely
using their mobile phones. With the total available market of worldwide
wireless end-users, service and payment providers can leverage a common
interface and increase revenue. Using the same global identity framework,
enterprises and governments could use mobile devices to enhance access
control.
Radicchio and the (t²r) effort have recently been recognised through
liaisons with the GSM Association Mobile Commerce Interest Group, the
GSM Association CTO Advisory Board, the ICTSB and the Liberty Alliance
Project. Discussions are underway with leading financial organisations.
In addition, Radicchio is a participant of the European Commission's 5th
Framework project "A Trusted Platform for Wireless Data Services".
The (t²r) draft architecture is under review by the Radicchio Best
Practices Working Group and within the European Commission project team.
A consolidated draft will be available for review at the September workshop.
Radicchio is in the process of inviting delegates to the first open
workshop on (t²r) being held in conjunction with the mobile commerce
world Europe event on 26th September in London at the Sunborn Yacht Hotel,
Royal Victoria Dock.
