Gemplus Filderstadt ready for UMTS

Filderstadt, 27 September 2002 - Gemplus, (NASDAQ:GEMP), the leading manufacturer of smart card-based solutions announces the production and shipment of the first USIM smart cards for UMTS Networks from the Filderstadt production site. These cards, GemXplore 3G, are equipped with the most advanced security features and provide a multi-application platform to UMTS Network Operators for the roll out of 3G mobile data services.

As the card is backwards compatible, it can manage 2G and 3G services simultaneously, ensuring consistent service provisioning in the migration from GSM to UMTS.

The production and delivery of the first USIM Cards in Filderstadt underline the technological leadership of Gemplus in Germany.

"The production of the first USIM cards for UMTS represents a great success for the Filderstadt site and proves that Gemplus remains on top of technological development," said Patrick Lacruche, General Manager of Gemplus GmbH, Filderstadt: "As the production of these cards demands the highest technological skills both for the development and the production, Gemplus is clearly ready for the markets of the future."

Gemplus was the only European smart card provider in the launch of the NTT DoCoMo's W-CDMA network in Japan and has strong European 3G references such as Telenor in Norway. To ensure compatibility and interoperability, Gemplus has tested its USIMs with key handset manufacturers and international providers of 3G network infrastructures.

Gemplus founded the Filderstadt operation in 1992 and provides telecommunication smart cards for the Central & Eastern European Markets.

About GemXplore 3G
GemXplore 3G is a USIM card based on a new and flexible architecture, the UICC (Universal Integrated Circuit Card). This enables the easy download and upload of new applications, such as for EMV, loyalty, CDMA and GSM. This will allow for the convergence of telecom and banking standards, which in turn paves the way for secure mobile commerce. For the end-user, the key benefits of UMTS are services based on multimedia, high-speed data transfer, Digital Rights Management (DRM) and other future-proof applications. It provides enhanced security for personal data stored on the card and global roaming between other telecommunication standards.
