LM Gemplus Tops Cards Australia 2003

LM Gemplus wins “Best of Show” award while AIMS & Consolidated Computer Services
wins the Smart Card Industry Award using LM Gemplus Multi-Application Smart Cards

Melbourne, 23 October 2003 - LM Gemplus, a joint venture between Leigh Mardon and Gemplus, the world’s leading provider of smart card solutions, was awarded the coveted Cards Australia 2003 “Best of Show” award in September, in recognition of the innovative and multi-application dimension of its presence at the card industry’s premiere show.

Further gilding the win is the success of LM Gemplus customer AIMS Corporation, partnered with Consolidated Computer Services Pty Ltd, which was selected as the winner of 2003 Smart Card Industry Award at the Cards Australia 2003 Gala Dinner for their innovative Acacia Prison (WA) smart card solution.

LM Gemplus has delivered more than 25 million smart cards to customers within Australia and New Zealand over the three years since the incorporation of the joint venture company. The success of its customer AIMS hits an especially high note as the Acacia Prison solution is Australia’s only fully functional smart card system within a prison.

The solution provides a wide range of functions in the prison including access and movement control, EFT transfers, identity validation, canteen and vending machine purchase, job application and information access via kiosks.

AIMS General Manager, Business Systems and Development, George Signoretto, said, “The idea is to improve the quality of daily life within in the prison and to return prisoners to the community equipped with the skills to cope in a modern environment. These life skills allow cardholders to have more control of daily tasks. The LM Gemplus multi-application smart card and readers provide a secure and easy-to-use tool that cardholders quickly adopt as part of their life.”

LM Gemplus Chief Executive Officer, Philippe Carrere, said, “This achievement is a true example of a fruitful partnership. To succeed in promoting Smart Card technology in multi-application environment, it is critical to ensure that the partners believe in strong collaboration. The success of AIMS is payoff for 12 months of solid development work and successful implementation, all in line with the strategy LM Gemplus has been deploying since its inception.”
