Celltick and Gemplus Offer Always-On Interactive Broadcast Marketing Over a Mobile Phone

Uses subscriber’s idle time to broadcast silent and non-intrusive offers to help operators generate additional revenue.

  • Operators offer subscribers opt-in/opt-out solution to receive real-time information services such as news, promotions, interactive services or location-based services

  • Non-intrusive content is broadcast silently during idle time of subscriber’s GSM/GPRS handset

  • Operators can generate revenue from content, applications and value-added services via continuous, interactive channel with subscribers

3GSM World Congress, 18 February 2003, - Gemplus (Paris Euronext: Euroclear 5768 and NASDAQ:GEMP), the world's leading provider of smart card solutions, and Celltick Technologies Ltd, the premier provider of mobile interactive broadcast solutions, today announce a new solution for operators to enable "always on" interactive-broadcast marketing on mobile handsets.

Available as an opt-in or opt-out application, the solution enables GSM/GPRS network operators to broadcast content, applications or offers to use value-added services continuously during the idle time of a subscriber's handset. The service is non-intrusive as there are no alerts or beeps sent to the subscriber. Messages appear on the screen for approximately one minute like an interactive screen saver and no information is stored on the SIM card, inbox or phone itself. Interested subscribers simply have to click on the service advertised to access the content.

To date, three main issues have created barriers to value-added service uptake. Firstly, subscribers lack awareness of what value-added services are available. Cumbersome interfaces and the need for subscribers to initiate services through repeated clicks on the phone further deter subscribers from exploring new services. This solution overcomes these issues by using the handset screen as the ultimate silent and personalised service which subscribers can choose to interact with.

This solution uses Celltick's proprietary Interactive Broadcast technology with Gemplus' range of SIM cards for native and Java technologies, GemXploreÔ. Celltick's Interactive Broadcast Solution uses Gemplus' dynamic SIM Toolkit (STK) technology to deliver these offers to the mobile handset. Celltick's Interactive Broadcast platform has already been successfully deployed nationwide in India for Hutch (formerly Hutchinson) and Orange in Mumbai.

Commenting on the announcement, Yossi Wellingstien, Celltick CEO, said; "Our partnership with Gemplus will enable us to target new opportunities within Europe that mirror the successes we've had in Asia."

"The integration of Celltick's Interactive Broadcast Platform with our smart card technology has created an innovative solution that maximises the potential of the SIM to help operators promote value-added services to a large subscriber base. This solution ties in with our strategy to help operators maintain close relationships with its subscribers and generate revenue within a 2G environment," said Philippe Vallée, President of the Telecom Business Unit, Gemplus.

Come to the Gemplus booth (Hall 1, B19 - Palais des Congrès) or cross the Croisette to visit the Gemplus Experience Center to discover the opportunities that go beyond smart.
