Gemplus Launches MySIMcopier to Support SIM Renewal and Migration Campaigns

• Stand-alone tool enabling the end-user to copy phonebook and SMS data from one SIM to another in complete security

Cannes, 18 February 2003, Gemplus (Paris Euronext: Euroclear 5768 and NASDAQ: GEMP), the world's leading provider of smart card solutions, announces the launch of its innovative product for SIM migration and renewal, endorsed by encouraging results from a Taylor Nelson Sofres survey.

Sent alongside the new SIM to their home address, the end-user will be able to use MySIMcopier to copy phonebook and SMS data from the old to the new SIM with no loss of personal information. MySIMcopier, as part of a complete logistics package for managing renewal campaigns from card personalization and customer data matching to end-user delivery, will accelerate and enable a higher acceptance rate for the new SIM. MySIMcopier can also copy the data from a 2G SIM to a 3G USIM, thus smoothing the migration from 2G to 3G networks.

MySIMcopier works with all GSM 11.11 standards, be it native or Java. Thus it can copy data from any SIM of any manufacturer, from any operator.

In January 2003, Taylor Nelson Sofres, the fourth leading market information group, carried out 333 face-to-face interviews among heavy mobile phone users in 4 European countries (France, Germany, Italy and the UK) to judge the popular feeling towards changing SIM cards and the impact MySIMcopier might have on this. Alain Imbert, Telecoms Account Director, Taylor Nelson Sofres, said, "The results towards MySIMcopier were very positive in favor of the product. Having to re-enter their phonebook was seen as a barrier to SIM migration by 75% of European heavy mobile users but with a device that copies across personal data, 84% would be prepared to move to a new SIM to benefit from new services. Consumers strongly value the usefulness and ease-of-use of the Gemplus' product. Gemplus' MySIMcopier design received a high score of 7.2 out of 10 compared to their closest competitor (4.8 out of 10)."

The study showed that MySIMcopier increased interviewees' acceptance for changing their SIM card, with 33% of the sample developing a more positive attitude towards SIM card change having been presented with the Gemplus product.
