showcases its strategy for the Telecom industry with a range of innovative
and customer-centric wireless data solutions designed to generate revenue
on the road to 3G.
In accordance with Gemplus' strategy announcement from CEO, Alex Mandl,
on 19th December, Gemplus Telecom already demonstrates a range of solutions
to reinforce its position. With 15 years of experience in smart cards
for telecom, Gemplus is building on the strength of its SIM card business
to focus on wireless applications and services and investigating the role
of the SIM in other markets, such as Wireless LAN.
Gemplus in Java
Gemplus has been focusing on creating an open, interoperable wireless
world by developing Java CardTM enabled solutions and delivering them
to a range of operators, such as Orange UK and Movil de Entel,
part of the TIM group. The launch of the Global 1 SIM platform to Vodafone
Ireland was a milestone in creating a open, common platform for the
deployment of common data applications across the whole Vodafone Group.
Our Java Card, GemXploreTM 'Xpresso, was certified EAL5+ by Common Criteria,
paving the way for real mobile commerce, while with Dynamic Memory Management
as standard, operators can make the most of the available memory space
when updating, writing and erasing applications. In addition, Gemplus
has been working with Apeera, Digital Bridges and esmertec on securing
Java applications via the SIM.
SIM-based services
With Over The Air, Gemplus connects its card expertise to the operator's
infrastructure, thus creating an important communication channel with
subscribers even post card issuance. Gemplus has partnered with content
and service providers and operators to offer subscribers with a range
of revenue-generating applications. Subscribers of Oi in Brazil
and MTS in Russia are already benefiting from services over the
mobile phone such as email, chat, mobile banking and mobile account management
thanks to Gemplus SIM-browsing technology. Recently, Gemplus has worked
with Celltick, the premier provider of mobile interactive broadcast solutions,
to create a solution for to enable "always-on" interactive broadcast
marketing on mobile phones.
Mobile Payment
A key role for the smart card is in securing and enabling mobile transactions.
Gemplus has already implemented projects with several operators to bring
real mobile payment applications to the market, both in Europe and beyond,
such as Mobistar in Belgium, SFR in France and Orange
Dominicana. Relevant partnerships are essential to the success of
mobile payment, which is why the partnership with iPIN was so important.
The result of which is mobile top-up of prepaid accounts and a strategy
for the implementation of content charging and e-purse functionality.
3G and beyond
Looking to the future, Gemplus has a robust and proven offer for the roll
out of 3G networks. With its 3G offer deployed in the two most advanced
wireless networks, Japan and Korea, Gemplus is the only smart card player
who can share so much experience with their customers. In addition, Gemplus
is investigating emerging markets and has already implemented pilots in
Russia, using SIM technology to secure Public Wireless LAN.
Gemplus continues to grow in the telecom sector and by focusing on its
core business and helping its customers maximize the potential of the
SIM, Gemplus will be able to expand. By operating services on behalf of
its clients, Operators can focus on their core business while Gemplus
manages their preferred roaming lists and their fleet of cards remotely.
By providing future-proof solutions for a range of technologies, Gemplus
