New
GSM operators Centennial and INTELCO to drive revenue using Gemplus's SIM-based
provisioning and content messaging services
Gemplus adds an average of $2.50 to monthly Average
Revenue Per User (ARPU) with pulled content messages providing ring tones,
icons, horoscopes, weather, news, sports trivia, quotes, and numerology
Luxembourg, Las Vegas, NV, RCA Annual Conference and Exhibition, April 14,
2004 - Gemplus International S.A. (Euronext: LU0121706294 - GEM and NASDAQ:
GEMP), the world's leading provider of smart card solutions, today announces
that Centennial Communications Corp. and International Telecommunications Ltd.
(INTELCO), have selected its SIM cards, provisioning and content messaging
services for their GSM service.
Centennial is one of the largest independent wireless telecommunications
service providers in the United States and the Caribbean and INTELCO is a new
nationwide wireless operator in Belize. Centennial's GSM subscribers, as well as
INTELCO's anticipated growing subscriber-base will have access to Gemplus's
Operated Services solution, which has now been selected by ten wireless service
providers in the Americas. This demonstrates the growing interest in SIM-based
services and the increasing adoption of GSM in the region.
"Gemplus offers a one-stop shop for SIM cards and remote provisioning
services," said Phil Mayberry, President U.S. Wireless at Centennial.
"The service is efficient and convenient for operators migrating to GSM. We
benefit from their long experience in this field."
In addition to SIM cards and remote provisioning services, Gemplus will also
provide content to INTELCO and Centennial subscribers, who will be able to use
interactive menus loaded on the SIM cards to pull premium messaging content.
Gemplus offers ring tones, icons, horoscopes, weather, and news and recently
added inspirational and humorous quotes, biorhythms, energy meters, sports
trivia, and games to its content library. With Gemplus's messaging services,
operators can immediately differentiate themselves in a competitive marketplace
and rapidly increase ARPU based on Short Message Service (SMS). Results from
operators who have implemented Gemplus's content messaging services show an
average increase of $2.50 to the overall ARPU.
"We are proud to add Centennial and INTELCO to our growing list of
Operated Services customers," said Jean-Louis Carrara, North American Vice
President of Telecommunications Marketing and Technical Consulting at Gemplus.
"Service providers can launch our services within one month and our track
record shows ARPU creation immediately."
"We at INTELCO rely on Gemplus's superior technical expertise and proven
project management for our GSM launch in Belize. Gemplus's SIM card
initialization and subscriber management services drastically simplify the
entire integration process," said Juan Carlos Namis, Director of
Information Systems at INTELCO.
