ICBC is the first to deploy EMV credit cards in China
LUXEMBURG – 20 December 2005 – Gemplus International S.A. (Euronext:
LU0121706294 – GEM and NASDAQ: GEMP), a world leading provider of smart card
solutions, announces that it has delivered EMV credit cards offering high
security for transactions for the leading Chinese bank, Industrial and
Commercial Bank of China (ICBC). The cards were manufactured locally by
Gemplus’s Joint Venture with Goldpac Group in Zhuhai, which is already EMV
certified by MasterCard International, VISA, DINER and China UnionPay.
“As the largest and leading bank in China, it was important for us to open the
way for the migration to EMV across the country. We were looking for a reliable
partner who could deliver on time and support us in the process. Gemplus gave us
the service and technical skills necessary for this first deployment”, said the
EMV project leader of ICBC.
The cards are based on Gemplus’s top of the range Java Card, GemXpresso Pro, and
are compliant with the latest specifications from MasterCard, MCHIP/4.0. With
Dynamic Data Authentication (DDA) on board, the cards provide the most advanced
security available for securing payment transactions.
“ICBC is one of Asia’s biggest banks and is taking the lead in deploying EMV in
China. Gemplus is delighted to support ICBC in its EMV rollout through our
Gemplus-Goldpac Joint Venture which has served ICBC for many years”, explains
Suzanne Tong-Li, President, Gemplus China.
