Gemplus deploys OTA over IP technology for high speed (U)SIM download for Telefonica Moviles España
Gemplus’s GemConnect OTA ready for Mobile IP networks
LUXEMBURG and 3GSM World Congress, Barcelona – 13 February 2006 – Gemplus
International S.A. (Euronext: LU0121706294 – GEM and NASDAQ: GEMP), the world’s leading
provider of smart card solutions, today announces that Telefonica Moviles España has selected
Gemplus’s
OTA over IP technology for the high speed delivery of multimedia services and
applications into the (U)SIM for mobile subscribers.
Using a faster and more powerful
communications channel based on IP and OTA technologies,
GemConnect OTA enables Telefonica
Moviles España to reach customers through the (U)SIM on all mobile packet networks (
GPRS, EDGE, 3G). This means that Telefonica Moviles España will be able to speed up the
deployment of content and update SIM services to different customer segments, even once the
(U)SIMs are in the field.
GemConnect OTA, based on its “Xxpress IP technology”, offers high speed download for data and
applets to match the increasing capacity of (U)SIMs for multimedia applications and content.
Removing the limitations of SMS technology, OTA over IP enables operators to download a 32 Kbytes
applet into the (U)SIM or back-up a 250-entry USIM multimedia phonebook in one minute,
which is 30 time faster than download over SMS.
Gemplus’s GemConnect OTA platform is based on the latest 3GPP and ETSI standards which will
ensure full interoperability between all Telefonica Moviles España’s SIM suppliers.
“This is one of the first deployments worldwide for OTA technology over IP. In this way,
Telefonica Moviles España is setting itself apart in terms of improving the management of
(U)SIMs in the field. This will cut the cost of service delivery, increase the speed of
service penetration and generate new revenue streams” said Philippe Vallée, Chief Technology
Officer, Gemplus. “Gemplus is the leading card manufacturer offering this service.”
