Gemplus and Orange strengthen brand and unify services via the SIM
Luxemburg, 15 February
2006 – Gemplus International S.A. (Euronext: LU0121706294 - GEM and NASDAQ: GEMP), the
world’s leading provider of smart card based solutions, and Orange, examine the role of
the SIM as the converging point for mobile, fixed and Internet services.
With the converging worlds of mobile and internet communications, mobile operators are
examining two keys issues. The first is how to extend their mobile offers to the internet
environment, and then how to address the new challenges presented from internet brands.
.sim is the new convergent offer from Gemplus that will help operators extend their services
out of the mobile space with the SIM becoming the entry point in to the PC/Internet world.
The SIM thus handles access to services via the mobile and the PC, the synchronization of
content across both worlds including their rights management, the management of multimedia
contacts and handset customization to reinforce the operator brand in the different,
converging environments.
Orange, which is to offer broadband and landline services, as part of France Telecom’s NeXT
convergence strategy, recognizes that the SIM is a focal and logical point of convergence
for their different communication channels, and can be used to create a real Orange
Community across mobile, broadband and fixed services. .sim is an operator controlled
element that stays in the hand of the end-user, and is traditionally used for secure
authentication and identification. With the extension of mobile services to the Internet,
these key assets stand to grow and, with the removal of the technical barriers that
limited SIM use in the past, .sim becomes the key placing operators at the centre of
digital convergence.
Philippe Vallée, Chief Technology Officer, Gemplus, said “One of Orange’s key assets is
their brand. .sim is able to take their mobile brand and extend it to the Internet / PC
world, thus enabling Orange to offer a unified user experience across their different
entities. .sim brings integrated phonebook, content management, a unified user interface
and service personalization to the Orange community while keeping Orange in control of its
different service offerings.”
