Overview

Communication tracing

Universal Tracer provides convenient and simple way to trace the communications between a mobile handset and (U)SIM to ensure the interoperability between these 2 entities.

Comparing to old product, namely VIEWS Detective, Universal Tracer provides more functionalities as per shown in table below:

 Note: Both the products using same hardware (Mobile-SIM Connector, Mobile SIM Connector Probes and Smart Adaptor). The only difference is in software.

Universal Tracer allows multiple tracing sessions. User can switch from 1 to another easily.

Interpretation modules

Universal Tracer enable interpretation of the traces captured by through interpretation modules. The communication translation can be customized depending on users preferences, by configuring the interpretation modules selection and arrangement.

The interpretation modules provided are as shown in picture below:

• File System Interpreter - Provides interpretation of File System contents

• APDU Name Interpreter - Provides interpretation of APDU Names only

• MSC Events Interpreter - Provides interpretation of the Mobile-SIM Connector events

• Spy Care Interpreter - Enchance APDU and STK Interpreter by providing more detail interpretation.

• STK Interpreter - Provides interpretation of STK commands

• PPS Interpreter - Provides interpretation of PPS exchanges

• Card ATR Interpreter - Provides interpretation of card ATR

APIs for interpretation modules are made public, these enables users to create interpretation modules themselves and share among each other.

Analysis

Universal Tracer has the capability to provide timing information corresponding to each communication event that it observes.

There are 2 types of timing information that are captured:

• Duration - specifies the duration of the corresponding event
• Elapsed - specifies the time that has elapsed from the last event to the beginning of the corresponding event.

The timing information is displayed in millisecond, up to 3 decimal digit precision.

Product Offers & Ordering Procedure

Universal Tracer offered in 3 different kits:

• Free Evaluation Kit - Downloadable for FREE from Gemalto Developer Network. The Evaluation Kit is a good starting point to understand what is the Universal Tracer and to get a good understanding of what it means to trace and interpret communications. 20 days evaluation duration granted.

  NOTE: Hardware is not provided in the FREE Evaluation Kit. Thus, user can only evaluate communication tracing in PC/SC card readers and card simulators. Tracing between handset and (U)SIM is not possible unless user purchase the hardware needed.

   

• Enterprise Kit - Enterprise Users have access to all the features of the Full Kit. With the Enterprise Kit, the user will receive a professional box with the Software on a CD, hardware (refer to hardware Introduction section) and Card Reader. Enterprise Users will also be granted with 2-years license. Purchase can be done through Gemalto Web Store.

• 2-Years License Extension Kit - Upon license expired, user may order license extension. Each license extension comes in 2-years duration. Purchase can be done through Gemalto Web Store.

NOTE: This is only a software license purchase. No physical kit delivery for the order. Refer to license activation procedure for detail process for the license request.

 

Hardware Introduction

The following hardware are used together with Universal Tracer. All of them are included in Enterprise kit delivery. Alternatively, you may order them separately from Gemalto Web Store.

Mobile-SIM connector (MSC)	MSC Probes	Smart Adaptor
MSC with USB connector. Trace communication between handset and card.	Probes to connect MSC to handset.	With SIM card slot on the card, the adaptor allows connection between MSC and card readers.

Note: Universal Tracer does not support MSC with RS-232 connector, which is already obsoleted. Please purchase new MSC at  Gemalto Web Store.

Product Pricing

Licensing and Activation Procedure

License is needed only for the users who need to create new traces. NO license needed for users to read or interpret existing traces.

2-Years License Extension Kit  

First, download the Universal Tracer from Gemalto Developer Network

Then, log on to the Gemalto Web Store to buy a 2 Years License. Once the transaction has been confirmed, an invoice will be sent to the End User and Gemalto will contact the End User to help him with the License Activation Process.

Enterprise Kit

You may also buy a Universal Enterprise Kit, a box containing the software on a CD as well as a Card Reader, hardware (refer to hardware Introduction section), 2 Years License. The Universal Tracer Enterprise Kit is also available on the Gemalto Web Store.

Once you receives the box and install the Suite, you will have instant access to the Evaluation Version. Then, Gemalto will contact you to help you with the License Activation Process.

Migration Plan

(VIEWS Detective to Universal Tracer)

If you are existing VIEWS Detective user, and having MSC hardware with USB connector and other hardware as described in section Hardware Introduction, you ONLY need a Universal Tracer 2 years license to migrate to Universal Tracer.
