Overview

Communication tracing

Universal Tracer provides convenient and simple way to trace the communications between a mobile handset and (U)SIM to ensure the interoperability between these 2 entities.

Comparing to old product, namely VIEWS Detective, Universal Tracer provides more functionalities as per shown in table below:

 Note: Both the products using same hardware (Mobile-SIM Connector, Mobile SIM Connector Probes and Smart Adaptor). The only difference is in software.

Universal Tracer allows multiple tracing sessions. User can switch from 1 to another easily.

Interpretation modules

Universal Tracer enable interpretation of the traces captured by through interpretation modules. The communication translation can be customized depending on users preferences, by configuring the interpretation modules selection and arrangement.

The interpretation modules provided are as shown in picture below:

• File System Interpreter - Provides interpretation of File System contents

• APDU Name Interpreter - Provides interpretation of APDU Names only

• MSC Events Interpreter - Provides interpretation of the Mobile-SIM Connector events

• Spy Care Interpreter - Enchance APDU and STK Interpreter by providing more detail interpretation.

• STK Interpreter - Provides interpretation of STK commands

• PPS Interpreter - Provides interpretation of PPS exchanges

• Card ATR Interpreter - Provides interpretation of card ATR

APIs for interpretation modules are made public, these enables users to create interpretation modules themselves and share among each other.

Analysis

Universal Tracer has the capability to provide timing information corresponding to each communication event that it observes.

There are 2 types of timing information that are captured:

• Duration - specifies the duration of the corresponding event
• Elapsed - specifies the time that has elapsed from the last event to the beginning of the corresponding event.

The timing information is displayed in millisecond, up to 3 decimal digit precision.

Universal Tracer available in 3 different offers, as below:

• Universal Tracer Free Evaluation

  Downloadable for FREE from Gemalto Developer Network.

  The Evaluation Kit is a good starting point to understand what is the Universal Tracer and to get a good understanding of what it means to trace and interpret communications. 20 days evaluation duration granted.

  NOTE: Hardware is not provided in the FREE Evaluation Kit. Thus, user can only evaluate communication tracing in PC/SC card readers and card simulators. Tracing between handset and (U)SIM is not possible unless user purchase the hardware needed.

   

• Universal Tracer Enterprise Kit

Purchase can be done through Gemalto Web Store.

The Enterprise Kit provides all you need to get started with Universal Tracer. This is physical box delivery, contains:

1. CD-ROM with Universal Tracer software
2. 1 PC/SC card reader
3. A 2 years license for Universal Tracer software usage (note: License extension can be purchase through Universal Tracer 2-Years license product)
4. Universal Tracer hardwares: (refer to Hardware Introduction for details)
   • 1 unit of Mobile-SIM Connector
   • 1 set of MSC Probes (2FF)
   • 1 unit of Smart Adaptor

Upon installation of Universal Tracer, you need to request for software license. Refer to license activation procedure for detail process of the license request.

• Universal Tracer 2-Years License

Purchase can be done through Gemalto Web Store.

The Universal Tracer 2-Years License provides possibility to extend your Universal Tracer usage. There is NO physical box delivery, but only electronic license delivery through email.

Hardware Introduction

The following hardware are used together with Universal Tracer. All of them are included in Enterprise kit delivery. Alternatively, you may order them separately from Gemalto Web Store.

Mobile-SIM connector (MSC)	MSC Probes (2FF)	Smart Adaptor
MSC with USB connector. Trace communication between handset and card.	Probes to connect 2FF device to MSC. A set of 4 orientation, with following part number: - 93699.00 0941 - 93700.00 0941 - 93701.00 0941 - 92377.00 0941	With SIM card slot on the card, the adaptor allows connection between MSC and card readers.

Note: Universal Tracer does not support MSC with RS-232 connector, which is already obsoleted. Please purchase new MSC at  Gemalto Web Store.

Other hardware to use together with Universal Tracer, but not provided in Enterprise kit are:

3FF Device Connector Probes

Probes to connect 3FF device to MSC. A set of 4 orientation, with following part number: - 10672 - 00 1046 - 10673 - 00 1046 - 10674 - 00 1046 - 10675 - 00 1046

Licensing and Activation Procedure

1. Make sure you installed the latest Universal Tracer software on your computer. Latest version is downloadable from Gemalto Developer Network.
2. Start your Universal Tracer.
3. From the Universal Tracer > Gemalto > Licensing, generate the License Request (XML File) by clicking on ?Export Profile? button
4. Send this request to tools_licensing@gemalto.com by clicking ?Save & Send? button

Migration Plan

(VIEWS Detective to Universal Tracer)

If you are existing VIEWS Detective user, and having MSC hardware with USB connector and other hardware as described in section Hardware Introduction, you ONLY need a Universal Tracer 2 years license to migrate to Universal Tracer.
