Gemalto On Board for Portuguese Citizen Cards
The
Portuguese Mint and National Printing Office has chosen Gemalto to provide the
solution for the Portuguese national e-ID ‘Citizen Card’ including Sealys
MultiApp ID Certified, the operating system, Coesys Issuance
solution, the personalization solution and applications, middleware and
associated helpdesk services. A first pilot phase began in February and by
mid-run, all Portuguese citizens will be able to use these high-end cards, which
include a built-in fingerprint feature, as their national ID document. Citizen Cards incorporate extended printing security features and will enable citizens to communicate with government administrations in a simple, fast and more secure manner by generating a legally-binding digital signature. The cards will also include several ID-numbers such as civil identification, taxpayer, social security and health, and in future will replace voting cards.
After roll-out, the program will involve more than two million cards per year. Furthermore, the Portuguese Citizen Card is the first ID project in Europe to be based on Identification Authentication Signature (IAS) specifications.
