Gemalto SIM cards

The SIM, Subscriber Identity Module, is a smart microprocessor chip for mobile phones used in all GSM and 3G networks (where it is called the USIM) as well as other digital telephone networks (IDEN and some versions of CDMA).

Based around a microprocessor, SIM cards are rather like a mini-computer with its own operating system, storage and built-in security features; it can add, delete and manipulate information in its memory and both send and receive data. SIMs are user-replaceable and slide into a little slot in your phone or device. A regular SIM measures 15 millimeters x 25 mm. A newer, smaller SIM, called the micro SIM or 3FF SIM card measures just 12mm x 15mm.

Originally designed to allow access to mobile phone networks, it authenticates the subscriber and ensures they are billed correctly for the airtime they use. The SIM also allows for the storage of personal phone directories, messages, roaming across networks at home and abroad and a host of value-added voice and data services. For instance end-users are able to instantly access news, games, chat & dating services and mobile payment applications through an easy to use interface provided by the SIM. This is independent of the type of handset used allowing operators to reach all of their customers. Operator-centric services such as call completion and automatic handset configuration help them reduce their customer service costs and raise their Average Revenue per User (ARPU).

The SIM is the final link in the chain from the network to the end-user which means that no customer can be connected to the network without their SIM. Network operators are able to communicate with, download applications to, and manage a SIM card remotely using Over-the-Air (OTA) technology. For example, network operators are able to update the SIM cards dynamically, providing new applications and new services without requiring users to upgrade their handsets or visit a shop.

Gemalto SIM cards provide interoperability and compliance with the latest standards, including new form factors such as the micro SIM, or 3FF (Third Form Factor) to ensure that our SIM cards can be used in any mobile phone or portable networked device (such as PDAs or Tablet computers), and connect to networks across the globe. Gemalto also provides devices, software and systems to manage everything from a single user's SIM card through an operator's entire fleet of SIM cards.
