ECS, a Taiwan-based PC manufacturer has launched a netbook with a 3G embedded modem compatible with Gemalto next generation Multimedia SIM. Its new features allow seeing the mass storage capacity of the Multimedia SIM, enabling to launch operator’s application set (including connection manager, personal data management and storage, multimedia content to name a few) when the card is first inserted.
The main benefit for the operators is that it avoids a complex customization process as new models of PCs are launched to the market with great frequency, and it widens their potential market for mobile broadband applications they wish to promote.
Having the security and applications within the same token (USIM) simplifies considerably the secure deployment of services. Thanks to the advanced operating system within the SIM, they can deploy their own branded environment to the netbook. The presence of the SIM also allows them to offer secure authentication to a variety of services, and helps them play a role in the open Internet world to generate new revenue streams.
Mobile broadband commercial success will be mainly driven by the sales volumes from traditional PC retailers. Gemalto’s solution ensures the presence of operators on the PC whatever the sale channel, creating a great opportunity for them to widen their mobile broadband offer beyond their own retail network.
