Gemalto Director Scoops Woman of Industry Trophy

Caroline Vignollet, R&D Software Director, based in La Ciotat, has been awarded the French Women of Industry trophy in the R&D and digital category by French tech magazine, L’Usine Nouvelle.

Caroline oversees the work of 500 engineers from 30 different nationalities in 11 countries, many of them men, but says, “Diversity is recognized as a true value by men and digital is a world where women are accepted.”

The second edition of the awards was held in Paris on 18 September. The aim of the trophy is to put women who “invent new products, lead major projects, push back the boundaries of production, found companies and manage finance” in the spotlight. Around 200 names were submitted, and the jury nominated 30 women in ten categories.

Our congratulations go to Caroline for her remarkable career and for winning this prestigious award, and our thanks go to the other candidates from Gemalto who were up against some very tough competition.

Innovation awards

Jean-Paul Caruana, Gemalto’s Advisor recognized by the French Agency for Research (Agence Nationale pour la Recherche).

Jean-Paul was given the “valorization and transfer” prize for the work done on the Very High Data Rate (VHDR) contactless Technology.

Under the lead of Jean-Paul Caruana, one of our five Technical Advisors, Gemalto initiated the F@CIL project (Fast Contactless Intuitive Layer) in 2007. The aim was to build upon VHDR technology to enable high speed contactless secure transactions. VHDR has been since them implanted in Gemalto’s products as well as in other F@CIL members products. This advanced technology was rewarded with a Sesames Award at Cartes 2009.

This award recognizes Jean-Paul Caruana as a leading expert for contactless solutions and it re-enforces Gemalto’s leadership in Contactless Communications.

In 2013 Agence Nationale pour la Recherce attributed 5 awards. F@CIL was one of 64 nominated projects. A scientific committee examined each projects’ documents: initial proposition, intermediary reports, minutes of review meetings and final report. Based on their decision finalists were proposed to the management of the ANR and they chose the winners.

Winner of 2013 Sesames Awards - M2M Technology to protect Amazon Rainforest

We are pleased to announce that Gemalto won the Hardware Sesames Award at the Cartes 2013 Tradeshow. The M2M solution to protect the Amazon Rainforest submitted by Manfred Kobe confirms our expertise in the Internet of Things domain. It has been voted the most impactful of the 10 Sesames winners by the audience at the award ceremony. Congratulations to Manfred and the sales team in Brazil led by Ramzi Abdine.

Our Cinterion M2M technology was used to provide high performance wireless connectivity in Invisible Tracck™. This innovative device, designed by Cargo Tracck™, was designed to prevent illegal deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest. Our solution was deployed to detect unauthorized logging activities missed by traditional satellite surveillance and radio monitoring. The Invisible Tracck device is embedded covertly in living trees and works in conjunction with sensors and cellular networks to detect and track any movement. It sends alarms and exact location information to a central server as soon as trees pass within 20 miles of a cellular network, facilitating a real-time response from Brazilian authorities to illegal logging. This M2M solution was vital in developing a tracking and tracing solution strong enough to withstand the heat and moisture of the Amazon.

We encourage you to discuss possible next year’s submissions to any of the Sesames’ contests (Asia, Europe and North America). The competition is fierce, therefore we should prepare strong applications. The guidelines for the 2013 Sesames Awards and deadlines will be announced as soon as we receive them from the organizers. Most probably they will be similar to those of 2013 which are outlined below:

Any technology, product, equipment or service submitted must have been released or officially announced in that year between July and November. We must be able to show at least a prototype to the judging panel. In 2013 the panel based its decision on the following ten point criteria:

  • Innovative nature of the entry submitted - 50% value
  • Market opportunity for the entry - 40% value
  • Quality of argument - 10% value
