United States Patent and Trademark Office denied CPI’s challenge to EMV payment card patents held by Gemalto

Austin,  TX,  November 28,  2016 - Gemalto (Euronext NL0000400653 GTO), the world leader in digital security, announces that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has denied CPI challenges to validity of several claims of Gemalto's U.S. Patent No. 5,944,833 widely used in protecting contact and contactless EMV chip card security. Gemalto's patents describe fundamental measures used in EMV cards around the world to prevent security breaches and card cloning.

Gemalto asserted this patent as well as U.S Patent No 6,786,418 against CPI Card Group Inc. in lawsuits filed in the United States District Court for the District of Colorado. The court put the case on hold while the USPTO completed its analysis. On November 10, the USPTO denied CPI's challenge to the validity of a number of Gemalto's patent claims of U.S. Patent No. 5,944,833, which can allow the case to resume.

"I am pleased that the U.S patent office decided in favor of Gemalto after a thorough examination." said Bertrand Knopf, Senior Vice President of Secure Transactions for North America at Gemalto, "Gemalto expects that its competitors respect Gemalto patents".

At Gemalto, we hold 4300 patents and patent applications in our intellectual property portfolio representing about 1200 patent families.
