Removing cash from the transport system
South Africa's Standard Bank and ABSA have climbed on board a scheme driven by the National Department of Transport to remove cash from the transport system.
Gemalto's contactless technology provides security and convenience for the nation's citizens, who can now travel on public transport without having to carry cash.
An estimated 130,000 Muvo cards have now been deployed for the eThekwini Municipality scheme.
It sounds simple, and it is.
Commuters can load cash onto their Muvo card at sales points across the city of Durban, including at a mobile unit where they also can buy them.
The solution has also been rolled out in Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Cape Town.
