​Continuing innovation for early adopters

South Korea's Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) have been relying on Gemalto for contactless technology in all its shapes and forms for many years. When they decided to switch from combi-cards to internationally recognized NFC technology, it was natural that they would turn to Gemalto. 

Gemalto began delivering SIM-based NFC for transpor​​​​tation applications to SK Telecom, KT Corp and LGU+ as well as the country's Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) in 2011. Instead of the country using a host of proprietary contactless schemes, a single prepaid card has been available nationwide since 2014. 

In addition to innovation and convenience, the technology is providing economic benefits: NFC is expected to generate an annual US$1.2 billion. It will also be responsible for creating an estimated 5,700 jobs in the country by the end of 2016.​​​​
